The Quiet Loneliness of Seeing Something You Can't Yet Live

This is not the loneliness of having nobody. It is the loneliness of having people, and not being able to hand them the thing you are actually living with.

A diagram of spiritual loneliness: a ring of eight circles closed on itself, and one circle carried outside it, still joined by a single thread

It usually starts as a small mismatch. Something opened — in a session, on a walk, in the middle of an ordinary week — and it was unmistakable. Then you tried to say it out loud, and heard yourself producing either a cliché or a sentence that made the person across from you politely change the subject.

So you stop mentioning it. Not out of secrecy, and not because anybody was unkind. You stop because the translation cost is too high, and because the versions of it that translate easily are the versions that are least true. That is the beginning of the isolation, and it has almost nothing to do with how many people are in your life.

There is a second layer underneath, which is lonelier still: you cannot yet live the thing you saw. You know it is real. You cannot make it operational on a Wednesday. There is nobody to talk to about that gap, because describing it requires first establishing that the thing you saw was real, and that conversation is exhausting before it begins.

What helps is not an explanation and not a community that agrees with you. It is being witnessed without being interpreted — someone in the room who does not need you to justify the experience, does not tell you what it meant, and does not fix it. That is a specific and unusual thing to arrange, and it is most of what a mirrored field is for.

If this is where you are

The three-month online spiritual retreat was built for the part of this that does not resolve in one sitting: three months, six live gatherings, maximum eight participants, with integration weeks deliberately left between the gatherings, and a mirrored field rather than a curriculum. You can read what it involves on the Return to Oneness page.
